The name of Constance McMillen is sounding loud on the Internet, after it was found out her school cancelled the Prom dance because she wanted to wear a tuxedo. This happened in Itawama County, Mississippi, located in a rural area with a population of about 23,000 people.

Constance McMillen is a lesbian student, and the school cut her rights before with a memo sent on Feb. 5 in which they detailed the criteria for bringing a date to the prom. They required dates to be of opposite sex. She could go if she and her date didn’t entered together and also if she didn’t wear the tuxedo because it could make other students feel “uncomfortable”.
In a statement that was released last night, the Itawamba County School district said, “due to the distractions to the educational process caused by recent events. It is our hope that private citizens will organize an even for the juniors and seniors. However, at this time we feel that it is in the best interest of the Itawamba County School District, after taking into consideration the education, safety and well being of our students.
